You are sat next to your best friend, the one you have idolised for their rebellious and humorous nature. The way that you two get along is incredibly close and at the age of ten, you both do not have a care in the world.
It's the whole thrill of being a few minutes late for school that pleases you. Mainly it is because of the jokes you and your friend laugh loudly about afterwards. You feel bigger than the world, greater than superman. You feel like you can take on anything. Even if your parents find out and shout at you, even when you are startled and emotional about the experience, it was still amazing.
Do you see anything evil about the above story? A bit mischievous and naïve but think carefully, that more than likely is yourself in the past. Nothing wrong with it... not really. Just an immature game, like watching movies you're not supposed to, like skipping school, like hanging round in places you're not supposed to because curiosity got the better of you.
Nothing wrong with a little thrill once in a while. Problem is, to a child, curiosity can lead to thrill killing a toddler.
When I speak of this, I speak of the gruesome murder that shocked the nation of Britain. I have read up upon it, to the comments that are thrown out about the two that were once named Robert Thompson and Jon Venables.
How their sentences should be longer.
Their names should be revealed.
They should be hung.
Deserve to die.
Deserve what's coming to them.
Evil has a fickle way of working. It creeps into a human mind and places a little imagination into a persons soul. When a mother deprived of sleep conjures a dream of her hitting her own child. When an annoyed employee feels like shooting their boss. When a screaming child irritates you so much on the bus you secretly wish they would suffocate.
A large portion of humans, would instantly regret imagining those scenarios, a conscious would kick in, and life will continue normally... or as good as. After all, are you not the devil himself for thinking up such a tragedy? We have all done it in the past. And ask yourself this, why do you wish something would hurt someone else. Were you hurt in your life? Of course you were, what human has not suffered at the hands of another human.
An explanation is in order as to why I went away from the topic in hand for a moment. The two boys, Robert Thompson and Jon Venables, were children. Children have an imagination far superior to our own for the idea of logic and realism is not so apparent. As an adult, I am aware that walking on the ceiling is near impossible, but a child will think up of some “super cool boots that like, have gravity things in them and push you up... and they'd spark lasers and turn you into a tiger and...”
Robert and Jon were inspired... although many say through a movie, I will not confirm this. The two were inspired, their imagination got working, and evil crept in. They took the two year old toddler, James Bulger and “played” with him. The sad truth is that James could have been an incredibly gifted teenager by now, who could had done charity work, flew planes, became a hero.
The what ifs... how lovely. He could also have become a serial killer but none of that would matter because he is already long dead, body unable to grow, think, learn or move. That was the boys fault. I want say that “they were only children, they did not know what they were doing”. That is false, a child at the age of two quickly find out that hitting mummy is not a good idea. The human instinct kicks in that mummy has to stop her child hitting her and let the child know that hitting is negative. Whether done in the correct manner or not, the message is still given that hitting is not good.
Their fantasy was taken a step too far. But perhaps if they could show regret and do some good, try to help in some way, try to give something back, apologising but knowing full well their apology would not be excepted.
But then I was then shown further evil. Jon Venables is an indirect child abuser. As I have mentioned, paedophiles I sympathise with. But I have no sympathy if ANY person took the fantasy too far and caused vast amounts of psychological pain. Fantasising, absolutely fine in my point of view. Taking imagination to reality that could hurt someone, never morally right. Jon has no more excuses up his sleeve. Not a child and again, stepping over the border of imagination into reality is unjust.
The best punishment for him, reveal who he is. That would be enough to put him through the torture that others went through, the fear and anticipation of what could happen to himself. Then again, it could be the worst. There are people out there with minds where evil has crept in, telling the soul that the fantasy should be played out. It is a difficult case... but something most certainly worth thinking thoroughly about.
